Here’s Why Democrats Are Focusing on Guns
It has nothing to do with sympathy for the victims of the crime in Texas last week, or with preventing similar crimes in the future.
Democrat politicians, talking heads on CNN and MSNBC, and writers for leftist newspapers and websites have been ranting about guns in the wake of an unusually abominable crime at an elementary school in Texas last week. However, it has nothing to do with sympathy for the victims of the crime or their families, or with preventing similar crimes in the future.
If Democrats were capable of sympathy, the lack of which is an indicator of sociopathy, they wouldn’t support abortion at the last minute of a nine-month pregnancy with no questions asked. They wouldn’t support murdering babies on the delivery table.
They wouldn’t encourage leftist riots and wouldn’t look the other way at murders committed by leftist rioters. They wouldn’t admire communist activists involved in cold-blooded murders of police officers and murderous communist revolutionaries like Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. They wouldn’t vote for Democrat District Attorneys who refuse to prosecute violent criminals, and wouldn’t support defunding or abolishing police departments so that violent criminals—most of whom are from demographics most likely to vote Democrat—can commit crimes without fear of arrest.
And they wouldn’t support legislation that would prohibit people from having guns with which to defend themselves against violent criminals and against tyranny, which would most likely be attempted by a prospective tyrant from the Democrat party.
Democrats are ranting about guns because the elections are in November
The Left kept relatively quiet about guns after Al Gore lost to George W. Bush not because of “hanging chads” in Florida, but because his anti-gun positions caused him to lose his home state, Tennessee, along with Arkansas and West Virginia.
Four years later, anti-gun John Kerry, hoping to avoid the same fate, tried to cast himself as a gun owner, but few voters were fooled. And Barack Obama kept quiet about guns during his first four years, to protect Democrats’ chances in congressional elections.
But midway through the Obama administration, “progressive” strategists decided to again use guns to rally their most radical voters, to make sure they turn out on Election Day, and they’ve been doing that ever since.
Also, the Democrats hope to get malleable, emotional, middle-of-the-road voters to forget about the reasons for which those voters have been planning to vote Republican:
Inflation, rising prices of gasoline, automobiles, food, and building materials, rising property taxes, and the lack of baby formula; rising crime and riots;
Democrats calling conservative white and non-white Americans “racists,” a pro-Democrat teachers’ union accusing parents of “domestic terrorism” for opposing critical race theory being forced upon their children by leftist teachers in schools throughout the country;
Transgender, drag queen, fluid gender, fake pronoun, and pornographic indoctrination in schools throughout the country, teachers telling schoolchildren to keep the indoctrination secret from their parents, schools punishing children for not using fake pronouns, and Democrat politicians saying that parents shouldn’t be in charge of what happens to their children in schools;
Nominal president Joe Biden withholding federal funds from schools that don’t allow boys in girls’ bathrooms, men being put in women’s prisons, flying the alphabet-soup rainbow flag outside U.S. government buildings, the military branches and various federal three-letter departments promoting “Pride Week,” named for one of the Deadly Sins, and the transgender war on women’s sports;
The corruption of the mainstream news media, cancel culture, and the war against the freedom of speech;
The vilification of America’s founding fathers and other statesmen, the claim that America was founded as a slave state and that the Second Amendment was adopted to hold down slaves, the war against the traditional family, and the long-standing war against Christianity;
The Biden administration intentionally flooding the country with illegal aliens and illegal drugs;
The debacle in Afghanistan, Biden’s facilitation of Iran’s nuclear weapon program; the attempt by Biden’s Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Gen. Mark Milley, and other senior officers to purge the military of personnel who oppose Marxism;
Democrat threats to pack the Supreme Court, Democrat Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer’s threat to conservative justices on the Supreme Court, and Obama’s and Biden’s nominations of leftist political activists to the Supreme Court and lower federal courts;
The mountains of lies about the Chinese virus and vaccinations, Hunter Biden’s laptop, the 2020 presidential election, the January 6 shenanigans, and Hillary Clinton’s and the FBI’s “Russia collusion” conspiracy against, and the Democrats’ bogus impeachments of, President Trump;
Holding January 6 protestors in jail without trial, the FBI’s harassment of people who attended the protest without even setting foot in the Capitol, and the NSA and CIA spying on Americans and lying about it to Congress.
Also, Democrats hope to quickly force Republicans to vote against anti-gun legislation the Democrats are pushing in Congress, most of which an honest Supreme Court would eventually strike down as violations of the Second and Fourteenth Amendments, but which right now might appeal to voters who are letting their emotions get the better of them.
The last few days, some Democrats have been pretending that the only guns they want to prohibit are those that would be necessary for defense against tyranny, such as AR-15s. But this is a lie. Democrats openly advocated banning all handguns during the 1970s, until they realized the public didn’t support it, and into the 1980s they continued to openly advocate banning compact handguns, until they realized the public didn’t support that either.
Since 1989, Democrats have been campaigning for a ban on semi-automatic rifles. But they still support banning handguns. When the Supreme Court heard District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), challenging that city’s handgun ban, Democrats filed amicus briefs with the court in support of the ban. And Biden just came out for banning 9mm handguns, which would be unconstitutional under the court’s Heller and McDonald v. Chicago (2010) decisions.
It’s premature to say whether swamp Republicans in the Senate, like Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn, and Lindsey Graham are serious about working with Democrats to impose one or another gun law, as some news reports suggest, or are only buying time until Congress goes into recess and emotional voters calm down and start thinking like adults again.
We’ll have to see how things play out in that regard. And we’ll have to see who wins in November and, if the Republicans do, whether they will do what the voters will have elected them to do. It will be a tall order. America’s problems are mostly attributable to its having adopted Democrat policies and values over the last 60 years, and undoing the damage will be difficult.
